A solar revolution

Rooftop solar energy systems are no longer just for the affluent. The cost of solar panels has fallen nearly 50 percent since 2010, even as new technologies have boosted their electrical output. The price of other solar components has also fallen sharply while achieving similar efficiency improvements. Perhaps the biggest change in solar energy systems, however, is how people pay for them. Relatively new financing options let homeowners install rooftop panels with low-interest loans and no money...

Solar Impulse takes off for six-day, six-night Pacific flight

The revolutionary Solar Impulse 2 aircraft has taken off early on Sunday for a six-day, six-night flight over the Pacific Ocean, the most ambitious leg of its quest to circumnavigate the globe powered only by the sun.

How Earth's Magnetic Field Shielded Us from 2014 Solar Storm

A giant eruption from the sun that scientists thought would hit Earth in 2014 missed because the sun's magnetic field channeled it away from the planet in an unexpected way, researchers say. This finding could lead to better modeling and forecasting of disruptive solar storms in the future, the scientists added. Solar eruptions, known as coronal mass ejections, are the hurricanes of space weather. These explosions can drive on the order of a billion tons of super-hot matter out from the s...

Meet Eris, The Solar System's Largest Dwarf Planet

Eris is the largest dwarf planet in the Solar System, and the ninth largest body orbiting our Sun. Sometimes referred to as the tenth planet, its discovery is responsible for upsetting the traditional count of nine planets in our Solar System, as well as leading the way to the creation of a new astronomical category. Located beyond the orbit of Pluto, this dwarf planet is both a trans-Neptunian object TNO , which refers to any planetary object that orbits the Sun at a greater distance than Nept...

Massachusetts powers solar systems

Large swaths of green pasture along Massachusetts highways are being transformed into solar power fields that state transportation officials say could save taxpayers $15 million over the next 20 years.Ten sites — in Salisbury; Plymouth along Route 3; and Framingham, Natick, Stockbridge and West Stockbridge along the Mass Pike have been selected for the first phase of the project. And the Department of Transportation is canvassing another three sites along state highways for the second phas...

Piyush Goyal supports idea of tax incentives for roof top solar panel

NEW DELHI: The idea of giving tax incentives for purchase of roof top solar panels will be taken up with Finance Minister Arun Jaitely, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said today. The suggestion of tax incentives came up through twitter during a 90-minute 'talkathon' with Power, Coal, New & Renewable Minister Piyush Goyal, Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Zubin Irani and Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. "We will discuss the suggestion with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley ...

Pros And Cons Of Solar Energy

With the growing threat of climate change due to the excessive release of carbon emissions, many nations are looking to clean energy alternatives to replace traditional fossil fuels. Of all the clean energy alternatives, solar has arguably been the most expensive. However, after considering the pros and cons along with the 80% drop in solar panel prices over the last five years, the future of solar energy is looking rather bright. The Pros Sustainable The advantage of solar energy is that it is ...

Morocco Nails Down Financing for Sprawling Solar Projects

Continuing its push for energy diversification, Morocco announced that it had completed financing for two large-scale solar projects assisting in the countrys renewable energy goals. According to local media reports, the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy MASEN announced that the NOOR II and III solar centers, producing 200 MW and 150MW, respectively, would be financed through a debt/equity ratio of 80/20. The debt will be financed by MASEN and guaranteed by an array of international lenders, incl...

Festival Camping Inside Solar-Powered Ecocapsules

This egg-shaped living vessel runs completely on wind and solar power, and can be hitched onto another vehicle like a regular trailer. It boasts a 9,744 watt/hour battery, solar cells, and a 750 watt wind turbine. The vehicle used for towing can even be electrically charged via the Ecocapsule. Inside there’s a tiny kitchen with running water, a bathroom with flushable toilet and shower, internal and external storage space, a desk area, and a foldout bed. The Ecocapsule also includes a ra...
