Finland is building a huge solar farm in a city with just 3.5 hours of

Oulu, a city in the north of Finland, will soon house the country’s biggest solar installation: 1,600 rooftop panels that will provide energy to a newspaper printing plant. Well, some of the time. Oulu’s latitude means that winter days get as short as three and a half hours, when the panels’ output will drop dramatically. It’s a particularly extreme example of the big problem renewable energy sources like wind and solar face, namely that ...

$100 Million For Solar PV Systems In Hawaii

$100 Million For Solar PV Systems In Hawaii March 31st, 2015 by Jake Richardson  Up to $100 million dollars will be invested for new solar photovoltaic PV systems through a partnership between the State of Hawaii, Clean Power Finance, Panasonic Eco Solutions, and the Coronal Group. The public-private partnership was made possible by the Green Energy Market Securitization Program, which is an initiative of the Hawaii State Energy Office. It is important to note the success of some of these...

NTPC's solar power plan may be unviable as states reluctant to buy

NEW DELHI: Reluctance on part of states to buy expensive clean energy has put a question mark on the feasibility of the country's biggest power generator NTPC's plans to install the targeted 15,000 megawatt of solar power in the next five years. The Cabinet had last month given its nod to NTPC to set up solar capacity of this magnitude in three tranches. The first tranche of 3,000 MW is to be set up under a mechanism of 'bundling' two units of solar with one unit of unallocated thermal power so...

California leads nation in solar installations as world sees 14

California became the first state to generate more than 5% of its electricity from utility solar, according a new report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration EIA . California's utility-scale 1 megawatt or larger solar plants generated a record 9.9 million mega watt hours MWh of electricity in 2014, an increase of 6.1 million MWh from 2013. California's utility-scale solar production in 2014 was more than three times the output of the next-highest state, Arizona, and more than all ot...

Solar Power To Become Cheapest Source Of Energy In Many

Solar power still amounts for a small share of net electricity generation around the world. In the USA, for instance, as of December 2014 it was responsible for just 0.45% of the total electricity produced. Things are changing quite quickly, however, and if the German think tank Agora Energiewende is right, faster than expected. The main obstacle to a more widespread adoption of photovoltaic so far, has been cost: solar used to be very expensive compared to coal or gas, but, according to Agora ...

Judge sides with electric utility in solar metering case

A federal judge on Friday threw out a Western Pennsylvania solar company’s lawsuit that claimed an electric utility’s refusal to accept excess generation from a proposed solar farm violated Pennsylvania’s alternative energy law. David Hommrich, president of Green Tree solar development company Sunrise Energy LLC, argued that Allentown-based PPL Electric Utilities Corp. exercised unfair competition and violated U.S. Constitutional protection of equal rights when it denied a...

Elon Musk's SpaceX buying $90 million of Elon Musk's Solar City

SolarCity, one of the world’s largest installers of solar panels, said today that SpaceX is investing in $90 million worth of its solar bonds. In a blog post today, SolarCity said that the bonds are “issued — and backed — by SolarCity and powered by monthly solar payments from thousands of solar customers across the country.” Added SolarCity, “SpaceX is effectively getting paid by the sun.” Elon Musk, of course, is tied to both companies — as well ...

Solar Energy Doesn't Have to Be a Luxury Item

Historically going green has only been an option to those who can afford it. Above, Dr. Bruce Karlin and his wife, Evelyn Love, have incorporated solar photovoltaic technology in their back house in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Photo by Jonathan Wiggs/The Boston Globe via Getty Images

Solar Impulse 2 touches down in China in round-the-world trek

BEIJING - A groundbreaking solar-powered plane successfully flew from Myanmar to central China early Tuesday as part of an historic round-the-world journey promoting renewable energy use. The organizers of the Solar Impulse 2 flight wrote in a statement that the plane landed in Chongqing, China, at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday, after leaving Mandalay, Myanmar, more than 20 hours earlier. Two Swiss pilots, Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, are flying the state-of-the-art plane, which is powered by m...
